Ret. Bishop Pete Weaver, a "turn-around" pastor for twenty-five years and former President of the Council of Bishops, is bringing his expertise to the churches of the York River District. Bishop Weaver is especially gifted in taking the lovely sounding names of initiatives and helping clergy and local congregations put them into meaningful practice in their context, a process called "contextualizing." Bishop Weaver will train clergy and laity on the York River District in the process of contextualizing through the From Vision to Vitality series. The process will start with a clergy retreat in February followed by clergy/laity combined sessions in March. All aspects of From Vision to Vitality involve active engagement with the material and assessing your congregation's ministry context. Clergy/Laity Session II is a follow-up from homework given in Session I. Please plan on attending both sessions.
Clergy/Laity Session I - Thursday, March 6 (7-9pm) at Chestnut Memorial UMC
Clergy/Laity Session II - Thursday, March 20 (7-9pm) at Chestnut Memorial UMC
Through Lent, we will be looking at the images of stone found in Scripture. Each Sunday at 11:00am will build toward that great Easter Celebration on April 20.
After Jacob got up early in the morning, he took the stone that he had put near his head, set it up as a sacred pillar, and poured oil on the top of it.GENESIS 28:18
Remember—don’t ever forget!—how you made the Lord your God furious in the wilderness. From the very first day you stepped out of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebels against the Lord. 29 But these are your people! Your own possession! The people you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm!DEUT. 9:7, 29
This happened so that all the earth’s peoples might know that the Lord’s power is great and that you may always revere the Lord your God.”JOSHUA 4:22
Therefore, the Lord God says: Look! I’m laying in Zion a stone,ISAIAH 28:16
a tested stone, a valuable cornerstone,
a sure foundation:
the one who trusts won’t tremble.
The tempter came to him and said, “Since you are God’s Son, command these stones to become bread.”MATTHEW 4:3
He answered, “I tell you, if they were silent, the stones would shout.”LUKE 19:40
Look, there was a great earthquake, for an angel from the Lord came down from heaven. Coming to the stone, he rolled it away and sat on it.MATTHEW 28:2
Our normal weeky worship is on Sunday mornings at 11:00am. Our worship together is in a traditional setting using hymns, liturgy, and preaching. There is always room for the Holy Spirit to move, however, so be ready for surprises every now and then!
